So what is Temporary Protective Status ? Well let's copy and paste the guidelines from the U.S. Citizen and Immigration Services web site shall we.
"The Secretary of Homeland Security may designate a foreign country for TPS due to conditions in the country that temporarily prevent the country's nationals from returning safely, or in certain circumstances, where the country is unable to handle the return of its nationals adequately. USCIS may grant TPS to eligible nationals of certain countries (or parts of countries), who are already in the United States. Eligible individuals without nationality who last resided in the designated country may also be granted TPS.
The Secretary may designate a country for TPS due to the following temporary conditions in the country:
Ongoing armed conflict (such as civil war)
An environmental disaster (such as earthquake or hurricane)
Other extraordinary and temporary condition
During a designated period, eligible individuals:
Are not removable from the United States
Cannot be detained by DHS
Can obtain an employment authorization document
May apply for travel authorization
Although having TPS, by itself, does not lead to permanent resident status (a green card), a TPS beneficiary may immigrate permanently under another provision of law if qualified."
That's two conditions Dream eligible youth would qualify for TPS. So why won't Obama use his executive powers and make this happen ? Well probably because the thought hasn't crossed his mind, but we're giving him a nudge in that direction. Cause let's be honest, he dun fucked up and the Latino/a communities don't like his ass anymore. If he wants to get back into office, he has to play these political games, and guess what? Doing an executive order to stop all Dreamer deportations would put him over the top, well just enough to stay in office.
But as always, it's never as easy as it seems, that why we're calling out on all Dream supporters to have Obama sign an executive order to grant all Dream eligible youth, temporary protective status. You can go to the White House web site, and sign the petition. Then share that link on facebook, twitter, myspace, yell it out the window, whatever and however you wanna share it. We need 25, 000 signatures by November 4. That's less than a month from now !! So, hurry, stop reading this and go sign it. Then come back.
.... You back ? Good. where was I ?... ahh yes Dreamer TPS. This is the last chance the movement has the momentum to make something before next year when nothing will get done because of elections. Even then, we won't know how those will look and the next window of opportunity will be in 2014. Which will mean more of the same shit going on and things getting worse. Sign the petition, share it and talk about it. 2011 has been a shitty ass year for the immigrant rights movement, lets make sure it doesn't end that way, because at this point, any positive change is a win for the entire movement. To keep giving folks hope that things are going to get better, but not without a fight.
